On Saturday, November 5, 2016, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation awarded Tad the 2016 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year at its Access to Justice Benefit held at the Independence Seaport Museum. The Bar Foundation presented the award in recognition of Tad's outstanding volunteer efforts in providing legal services to those in need and his significant commitment to the development and delivery of pro bono legal services in the region.
Tad is one of only two individual attorneys (rather than law firms) to have received this prestigious award since its inception. In January 2017, Tad will present a program on opening statements as part of Penn Law's Trial Practice Skills Boot Camp. Penn Law invited Tad to join the program faculty in light of the success of the deposition boot camp Tad created and presented at Penn Law the past several years.
Tad's article, entitled "My 15-Year Pro Bono Matter: How a Single Case Can Become the Endeavor of a Lifetime," appears in the Summer 2016 edition of The Philadelphia Lawyer magazine. A copy of the article can be viewed here.
The Philadelphia Bar Foundation recently announced that Tad LeVan will receive the 2016 Pro Bono Award at the Foundation's Annual Benefit to be held on November 5, 2016. The Pro Bono Award of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation is given annually to a Philadelphia law firm or corporate legal department that performs outstanding volunteer efforts in providing legal services to those in need. The award recipient demonstrates commitment to the development and delivery of pro bono legal services in the region and contributes significantly to innovative approaches to the delivery of volunteer legal services.
The Foundation selected Tad "because of his extraordinary commitment over 15 years to pursuing a pro bono case that mushroomed into a massive, precedent-setting constitutional victory benefiting tens of thousands of disadvantaged Pennsylvanians." More information about the event and the award ceremony can be found here. Tad LeVan with Lead Petitioner Tyrone Peake at CLS's Breakfast of Champions On June 1, 2016, LeVan Law Group LLC founder Tad LeVan received the Equal Justice Award, an annual honor given by Community Legal Services of Philadelphia to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary efforts to ensure equal access to justice through the legal system. Tad has a long history of groundbreaking pro bono and public interest engagements. Most recently, he led a team of talented attorneys who successfully obtained a unanimous ruling from the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, sitting en banc, that declared the lifetime employment ban contained in The Older Adults Protective Services Act ("OASPA") to be facially unconstitutional and enjoined the Commonwealth from further enforcement of the law against any Pennsylvania citizen. See Peake v. Commonwealth, 2015 Pa. Commw. LEXIS 585 (Dec. 30, 2015).
Today is the second time Tad received this distinguished award. He previously received the Equal Justice Award in 2004 for his outstanding pro bono work in an earlier matter that also successfully challenged the constitutionality of OAPSA's employment ban. Tad LeVan, founding member of LeVan Law Group, was recently quoted in an article appearing in Pennsylvania Law Weekly concerning his recent pro bono victory in which the lifetime employment ban of The Older Adults Protective Services Act was declared facially unconstitutional. In January 2016, LeVan Law Group founding member Tad LeVan will again present a four-day interactive "Deposition Boot Camp" at The University of Pennsylvania Law School. The participating students will engage in "real world" deposition taking and defending of fact and expert witnesses, and receive critiques from a panel of outstanding litigators. The program will also include lectures, panel discussions and demonstrations on a variety of relevant topics, including how to effectively question a witness, witness preparation, how to deal with difficult witnesses and obstreperous opposing counsel, and deposing experts.
